Reptiles are the fourth most common pet group globally, but their complex husbandry requirements mean that welfare problems from incorrect temperature, UV lighting, and diet are extremely widespread.
Reptile welfare is compromised by a combination of complex husbandry needs, poor owner education, and inadequate retail guidance. Metabolic bone disease — caused by calcium deficiency exacerbated by inadequate UV-B lighting — causes pain, deformity, and death in thousands of reptiles annually. Incorrect temperature management means reptiles cannot thermoregulate, compromising every bodily function. The 'starter pet' image of reptiles fundamentally misrepresents their needs. Better pet shop standards, mandatory husbandry information at point of sale, and reduced wild capture would all significantly improve reptile welfare.
