Welfare Considerations

Ferret welfare is compromised by the persistence of inadequate husbandry advice. Traditional caged ferret keeping without adequate free-roaming time, social companionship, or species-appropriate diet causes chronic welfare harm. Adrenal disease — extremely common in neutered ferrets in particular — is partly attributed to artificial light cycles and diet. Ferrets are intelligent, active animals that need stimulation, social interaction, and space to explore. Well-cared-for ferrets live 6-8 years; poorly cared-for ferrets often die earlier from preventable conditions.

What You Can Do

Keep ferrets in same-sex pairs or groups to prevent social isolation
Provide at least 4 hours of supervised free-roaming time daily outside their enclosure
Feed a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet formulated for ferrets or raw meat
Handle ferrets regularly from a young age for socialisation
