Welfare Considerations

Marine Protected Areas benefit animal welfare by reducing the direct harm of fishing — bycatch, entanglement, injury — and by restoring healthy ecosystems where animals can find food, shelter, and mates. Fish in areas with heavy fishing pressure are chronically stressed and undernourished; fish in well-enforced no-take zones live longer, grow larger, and have better individual welfare. MPAs that protect breeding and nursery habitat provide the ecological infrastructure for healthy populations whose individual members experience fewer welfare-relevant threats. Expanding and properly enforcing MPA coverage is one of the highest-leverage marine welfare interventions.
