Selective breeding programmes in aquaculture can improve both production efficiency and animal welfare — but genetic selection for welfare traits requires deliberate commitment.
Genetic selection in aquaculture has historically focused on growth rate and feed conversion efficiency. The welfare consequences of intense selection for growth — metabolic stress, cardiovascular problems, reduced disease resistance — parallel the broiler chicken situation in terrestrial farming. Deliberately incorporating welfare traits — disease resistance, behavioural calm, skeletal robustness — into breeding indices alongside production traits would significantly improve fish welfare. The genetic tools to do this exist; the barrier is willingness to accept modest productivity trade-offs for welfare gain. Regulatory requirements for welfare trait inclusion in breeding programmes would accelerate this shift.
