Wild geese are managed in many areas for agricultural damage prevention — but management methods have significant welfare implications for these long-lived, socially complex birds.
Wild goose management raises welfare questions about both the methods used and the disruption of social groups. Wing-clipping — removing feathers to prevent flight — denies a fundamental capacity and leaves birds vulnerable to predators. Lethal culling disrupts established pair bonds and family groups, causing distress in surviving animals. Egg oiling is generally considered more humane as it prevents new individuals being created rather than killing existing ones. Non-lethal management that accepts coexistence with geese is always preferable to lethal methods where feasible.
