Perch provision and design matters significantly for laying hen welfare. The motivation to roost at height is strong enough that hens in cage systems perform vacuum roosting movements on the wire floor — compelling evidence of frustrated motivation. In cage-free systems, perch design and placement determine whether all hens can actually use them or whether dominant individuals monopolise them. Multi-tier aviary systems with poorly designed perches contribute to the high keel bone fracture rates seen in some free-range flocks, as hens fall from improperly placed or slippery perches.
