Water is the most essential nutrient for livestock — more immediately critical than food in most conditions. Inadequate water access causes rapid and severe welfare harm through dehydration, heat stress, and reduced feed intake. Water quality problems — contamination, algal blooms, high mineral content — reduce water intake without obvious signs that operators recognise. Trough design that allows dominant animals to control access creates chronic water deprivation for subordinate individuals. Ensuring adequate, clean, accessible water for all animals at all times is one of the most fundamental welfare management requirements.
