Animal sanctuary welfare varies from excellent to deeply inadequate. Genuine sanctuaries prioritise the needs of each individual animal, providing species-appropriate environments, veterinary care, and social groupings for the remainder of the animal's life. Pseudo-sanctuaries often use the language of rescue while maintaining exploitative practices — breeding, selling, or using animals for entertainment. Independent accreditation by GFAS provides the most reliable quality signal for genuine sanctuaries. Consumer and donor support should be directed to accredited operations with transparent welfare reporting rather than to facilities that use rescue marketing without genuine welfare commitment.
