Plastic ingestion causes suffering and death across wildlife from seabirds to whales, with the scale of harm growing as ocean plastic accumulation continues.
Plastic ingestion causes prolonged suffering before death. A seabird with a stomach full of plastic cannot feel satiated because the physical bulk is present without nutrition — the bird starves while its stomach is full. Perforation from sharp fragments causes internal bleeding and infection. Microplastic accumulation in tissues has physiological effects that are increasingly understood to be harmful. The welfare harm of plastic pollution is enormous in scale and largely invisible to consumers. Reducing plastic consumption, supporting better waste management, and advocating for extended producer responsibility legislation are the most impactful individual and policy actions available.
