The evidence for chicken sentience has profound ethical implications for how we treat the most numerous farmed animal species. A species that can anticipate future events, distinguish individuals, maintain social relationships, and respond to the distress of companions has an inner life that is morally relevant. The standard dismissal of chickens as unaware, unfeeling animals — often used to justify intensive farming without welfare consideration — is incompatible with the scientific evidence. Accepting chicken sentience does not necessarily require veganism, but it does require that intensive chicken farming be subjected to much more serious welfare scrutiny than it currently receives.
