Welfare Considerations

Binturongs in inadequate captive conditions are unable to express natural climbing, foraging, and scent-marking behaviours, leading to chronic stress and stereotypic behaviour. Animals kept as pets are typically housed in entirely inappropriate conditions. Hunting pressure using snares causes injuries and death. Forest loss removes the complex arboreal habitat they depend on, forcing them into human-modified landscapes where they face increased mortality risk.
