Migration tracking technology presents a specific welfare trade-off in wildlife science: individual birds wearing tracking devices provide data that benefits the conservation of entire populations. The welfare cost to instrumented individuals ranges from negligible (for well-designed, appropriately-sized tags on robust species) to significant (for poorly designed tags causing flight impairment or injury). Welfare-aware tracking research minimizes tag weight relative to body mass, uses the most welfare-protective attachment method available, and continually revises protocols as miniaturization advances. The welfare cost of tracking must be explicitly weighed against the conservation benefit when study designs are considered.
