Historical overfishing of goliath groupers caused population collapse with enormous mortality. Current catch-and-release fishing causes barotrauma from rapid depth changes, causing bladder rupture and swim bladder issues. Stress during catch contributes to post-release mortality. Better release protocols and continued harvest prohibition are needed.
