Laying Hen Bone Strength and Welfare

Osteoporosis and bone fractures are among the most widespread welfare problems in commercial laying hens.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Commercial laying hens experience chronic bone depletion from the extreme egg production they have been bred for. Osteoporotic hens suffer fractures of the keel bone, vertebrae, and leg bones during normal activity. Pain from fractures persists for weeks, seriously compromising welfare in a significant proportion of all commercial flocks.
