Laboratory Mouse Welfare Improvements

Laboratory mice are the most widely used research animals globally, with welfare improvements having enormous aggregate impact.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Laboratory mice in barren cages without nesting material, shelter, or conspecifics show elevated stress hormones, abnormal behaviors, and different experimental responses than enriched mice. Ironically, poor welfare conditions may compromise scientific validity alongside animal welfare. Providing nesting material, housing groups, and environmental enrichment is low-cost and has large welfare and scientific benefits.
