Hamsters in inadequate housing without exercise wheels, burrowing material, and sufficient space show stereotypic bar-chewing and pacing behaviors indicating chronic frustration. Inappropriate housing together causes fighting and fatal injury. The minimum cage size recommended by welfare organizations is substantially larger than most commercially available cages.
