Manatees struck by boat propellers suffer severe lacerations that may penetrate body cavities, fractures, and internal organ damage. Survivors carry propeller scars for life and may suffer from chronic pain and reduced mobility. Repeated strikes on the same individual are documented. Speed zones and manatee detection systems are proven welfare interventions.
