Research into positive welfare states in pigs is informing new approaches to welfare assessment beyond absence of suffering.
Traditional welfare assessment focused on absence of suffering misses a significant dimension of animal wellbeing. Pigs that are healthy but in barren environments are not suffering acutely but are also not experiencing positive states. Research into positive welfare indicators including play, exploration, and positive social behavior is enabling more complete welfare assessment and informing richer housing standards.
