Access to effective pain relief for farm animals has improved but remains inadequate across much of global livestock production.
Farm animals undergoing painful procedures including castration, disbudding, and parturient complications frequently receive inadequate or no pain management. Economic barriers, lack of training, and restricted access all contribute. Countries that have required pain management through regulation have demonstrated that compliance is achievable and welfare improves without production losses. Training and access are the primary barriers to better pain management.
