Welfare Considerations

Aquatic turtles in inadequate tanks without UV-B lighting develop metabolic bone disease causing shell deformity. Poor filtration causes bacterial infection of wounds and systemic disease. Inadequate water temperature impairs immune function. Their relatively small size when juvenile creates a false impression that small tanks are suitable for adult animals that can reach 30-40 cm.

Provide appropriate tank size, UV-B, and filtration from the start
Never purchase a turtle without researching its lifetime care requirements
Consider adoption from a reptile rescue rather than buying
