Aquatic turtles in captivity have complex environmental requirements that are frequently not met, causing chronic welfare compromise.
Aquatic turtles in inadequate tanks without UV-B lighting develop metabolic bone disease causing shell deformity. Poor filtration causes bacterial infection of wounds and systemic disease. Inadequate water temperature impairs immune function. Their relatively small size when juvenile creates a false impression that small tanks are suitable for adult animals that can reach 30-40 cm.
