Improving hatchery conditions for salmon has welfare and survival benefits when fish are released into the wild.
Salmon in traditional hatcheries at high density with uniform, still water develop behavioral deficits that reduce wild survival. Their naive response to predators and poor swimming conditioning causes high post-release mortality. Conditioning programs exposing hatchery salmon to predator stimuli and varied currents improve both individual welfare through exercise and collective conservation through improved survival.
