Veal calf welfare has improved significantly in many countries through legislative reforms while challenges remain in some production systems.
Traditional white veal production caused profound welfare harm through individual stall confinement and deliberate iron restriction causing anemia. Progressive reforms have substantially improved conditions. Rose veal systems allowing group housing, iron-sufficient nutrition, and outdoor access demonstrate that welfare and production are compatible. Raising male dairy calves for veal is more welfare-positive than neonatal killing.
