Dogs and cats not adequately socialized during their developmental windows develop fear responses to stimuli they were not exposed to that persist lifelong. Under-socialized dogs cannot participate in normal activities without severe stress and are at higher risk of aggression and behavioral euthanasia. The welfare impact of inadequate socialization extends across the entire lifespan.
