Cattle Pain at Slaughter Welfare

Pre-slaughter stunning is the most welfare-critical intervention in cattle slaughter, yet failures and exemptions cause preventable suffering.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cattle that are inadequately stunned before slaughter regain consciousness before dying, experiencing extreme pain from the slaughter wound. Stun failures from incorrect positioning, inadequate charge, or gun malfunction cause repeat stunning that amplifies distress. Religious slaughter without stunning causes suffering from the time of cut until loss of consciousness. Monitoring for post-stun insensibility and rapid bleed-out reduces suffering in all methods.
