Crocodilians confined to shallow water pools or concrete enclosures cannot perform their essential thermoregulatory behaviors of deep-water cooling and basking. Without access to both, they experience thermal stress and cannot regulate body temperature for optimal metabolic function. Large, naturalistic habitats with variable water depth and basking areas achieve substantially better welfare outcomes.
