Non-invasive methods for assessing pain and welfare in wild animals are advancing through behavioral and physiological research.
Traditional welfare assessment of wild animals required capture and handling that itself caused welfare harm. Non-invasive methods including fecal cortisol analysis, remote behavioral monitoring, and non-contact heart rate measurement enable welfare assessment without the welfare cost of capture. These advances are enabling welfare science to extend to wild population management contexts where it was previously impractical.
