Welfare Considerations

Bats with white-nose syndrome are roused from torpor by fungal irritation multiple times during winter, depleting fat reserves. The combination of immune disruption, energy depletion, and starvation causes prolonged suffering before death. Population collapse affects millions of individual animals.
