Chronic pain in cats is systematically under-recognized due to their behavioral masking of pain requiring specific assessment approaches.
Cats experiencing chronic pain from arthritis, dental disease, kidney disease, or cancer rarely vocalize or show obvious distress. Their behavioral masking of pain is an evolved prey-species survival strategy. The Feline Grimace Scale and behavioral indicators including reduced jumping, altered grooming, and withdrawn behavior enable recognition of hidden suffering. Training owners and veterinarians in these indicators enables earlier treatment of prevalent chronic pain.
