Welfare Considerations

The standard hermit crab habitat sold in pet shops — small plastic tanks with painted shells, commercial sand and no humidity — is inadequate for their needs. Crabs kept in this way show repetitive behaviours and rapid decline. Growing evidence for crustacean pain experience makes hermit crab welfare a genuine ethical concern. Painted shells interfere with the crabs' ability to select appropriate shelter.
