Green iguanas are among the most commonly sold large reptiles globally, yet their demanding care requirements lead to high rates of suffering in captivity.
Iguanas are often purchased as juvenile animals without buyers understanding their adult size and care demands. Most are housed in enclosures that are too small, too cool and without adequate UV-B lighting. Tail whipping and claw injuries to owners from inadequately socialised iguanas often lead to abandonment. Iguana rescue centres are overwhelmed with surrendered animals.
