Chinchillas are farmed for their exceptionally soft pelts and kept as companion animals, with welfare challenges in both contexts.

Welfare Considerations

Fur farm chinchillas experience all the chronic frustrations of small-cage confinement — inability to run, jump or dust bathe. Pet chinchillas are often improperly housed in cages far too small, fed inappropriate diets and kept in isolation. Their long lifespan (15-20 years) means poor conditions cause prolonged suffering. The global decline of wild chinchillas is driven by historical fur hunting.
