Castration of male cattle is routine practice globally, but the use of pain relief during the procedure remains inconsistent and inadequate.
Castration causes acute and prolonged pain evidenced by reduced feed intake, altered posture and elevated cortisol. Banding in older animals causes the most prolonged pain. Local anaesthetic alone is insufficient — anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are needed for adequate multi-day pain coverage. Many producers still do not use pain relief due to cost, inconvenience or lack of mandatory requirements.
