Rainbow Trout Welfare in Aquaculture

Rainbow trout are the most widely farmed salmonid globally, with welfare challenges spanning crowding, disease management and slaughter practices.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Rainbow trout are among the most welfare-studied fish species. Research confirms they have nociceptors, show pain responses and remember aversive experiences. Ice slurry immersion — the commonest commercial slaughter method — keeps fish conscious and in cold stress for up to 15 minutes before death. Electrical or percussive stunning provides near-instantaneous unconsciousness and is commercially viable in trout farms.
