Welfare Considerations

Crabs show clear nociceptive responses to injurious stimuli and learn to avoid locations associated with electric shock. Live transport out of water causes physiological stress. Dismemberment of live crabs — common in Asian cooking traditions — likely causes suffering given their neurological complexity. The scale of global crab harvesting means even small probability of suffering represents enormous total harm.
