Cosmetic animal testing has been banned in the EU and many other countries but continues globally, particularly in China and other major markets.
Cosmetic animal testing involves repeated application of products to rabbits, guinea pigs and mice to assess skin and eye irritation — procedures that cause significant pain. Many animal test data are required by Chinese regulators as a condition of market access, incentivising companies to maintain animal testing even where alternatives exist. Full global harmonisation of non-animal testing requirements remains the critical goal.
