Dog Breed-Specific Welfare Issues — Brachycephalic Breeds

Flat-faced dog breeds including French bulldogs and pugs suffer chronic breathing difficulties, eye problems and spinal issues as a direct result of selective breeding.

Welfare Considerations

Brachycephalic dogs often live their entire lives in respiratory distress that their owners perceive as normal snoring. The chronic effort of breathing through narrowed airways causes sleep disruption, exercise intolerance and heat vulnerability. Spinal malformation (hemivertebrae) causes chronic pain and paralysis in severely affected individuals. The welfare cost of popularity-driven breeding for extreme traits is borne entirely by the animals.

What You Can Do

Avoid purchasing brachycephalic breeds and discourage friends and family from doing so
If you already have a brachycephalic dog, seek veterinary assessment for BOAS and treat appropriately
Support campaigns for breed standard reform that prioritises health over exaggerated features
Choose health-tested dogs from breeds without structural conformational problems
