Welfare Considerations

Penguins in well-managed zoo exhibits benefit from veterinary care, reliable food and protection from natural predators. However, inadequate pool depth, insufficient social group size, lack of nesting substrate and inappropriate temperature ranges cause chronic welfare problems in poorly managed facilities. Penguin welfare standards have improved significantly through zoo accreditation requirements, but unaccredited facilities remain a concern.
