Frogs infected with chytrid fungus die from electrolyte imbalance-induced cardiac arrest over days to weeks — the process causes lethargy, abnormal posture and then death. The scale of chytrid-driven mortality is staggering — billions of individual frogs killed globally. Captive assurance colonies protect species from extinction but cannot address individual welfare harm in wild populations. The welfare case for developing probiotic and genetic resistance tools is compelling given the scale of suffering.
