Welfare Considerations

Stick insects that cannot hang freely to moult correctly develop limb abnormalities and may die from failed ecdysis. Enclosures too small to allow full hanging prevent this fundamental behaviour. Inadequate humidity during moulting causes the exoskeleton to adhere rather than shed cleanly. School stick insect populations frequently suffer from these preventable welfare problems due to insufficient guidance. They are more complex animals than their reputation as 'low-maintenance' suggests.

What You Can Do

Provide stick insects with enclosures at least three times the length of the animal in height
Maintain appropriate humidity by misting daily and choosing mesh-sided enclosures
Never release stick insects into gardens or wild areas where they are not native
Ensure schools keeping stick insects have access to accurate husbandry guidance and appropriate plant species
