Pangasius is a widely farmed catfish species from Southeast Asia. Large-scale production raises welfare concerns around water quality, disease, and slaughter.
Pangasius in high-density ponds commonly experience poor water quality, elevated ammonia, and low dissolved oxygen. These conditions are chronically stressful for fish capable of sensing and responding to their environment. Antibiotic-resistant infections are a documented problem. Slaughter without prior stunning causes prolonged death. Welfare certification schemes cover a very small proportion of global production. Consumer awareness of pangasius welfare is low.
