Lobster Welfare and Sentience Evidence

Scientific evidence increasingly supports that lobsters can experience pain and suffering. Swiss and UK legislation has begun to reflect this through live animal protection requirements.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Live boiling without prior stunning is the dominant kill method globally. The time to death after immersion can be 30-60 seconds for small lobsters, longer for larger animals. Tail autotomy (self-amputation) under extreme stress may indicate acute suffering. Electrical stunning followed by spiking is the most welfare-positive approach. Clawed lobsters and spiny lobsters show comparable sentience evidence. Consumer and regulatory pressure is driving change.
