Blowfly strike is a painful and potentially fatal condition in sheep where flies lay eggs in the wool, and larvae feed on living flesh. Prevention is critical to sheep welfare.
Blowfly strike causes intense, prolonged suffering. Maggots secrete proteolytic enzymes that liquefy skin and underlying tissue. Affected sheep show pain behaviours including restlessness, stamping, and biting at the affected area. If undetected, strike can be fatal within days. Prevention through dagginess management, timely shearing, and responsible use of preventative treatments is far preferable to treatment. Daily inspection during high-risk periods is essential.
