Guinea pigs kept alone without companionship develop chronic stress. Inadequate housing - often the small cages sold in pet shops - prevents normal movement and behaviour. Guinea pigs need hay as 80% of their diet for gut health; without it, gut stasis can be fatal. Vitamin C must be provided daily as they cannot synthesise it. Dental disease from inadequate hay causes chronic pain. The gap between typical pet shop guidance and actual welfare needs is significant.
