Reptiles are the fastest-growing group of companion animals but welfare standards are poor. Temperature, UV lighting, humidity, and diet must be precisely managed to meet their needs.
Reptile welfare failures are often invisible until the animal is seriously ill. Inadequate UV-B lighting causes metabolic bone disease that weakens and deforms the skeleton over months. Incorrect temperature gradients prevent proper digestion and immune function. Psychological needs - including hiding, climbing, and burrowing - are frequently unmet. Many keepers genuinely do not know their animals are suffering. The lack of regulation in the pet trade means unsuitable animals are routinely sold to unprepared owners.
