Cultivated meat, plant-based proteins, and precision fermentation offer routes to dramatically reduce animal suffering in food systems. Their welfare implications are significant.
Alternative proteins offer the possibility of dramatically reducing animal suffering at scale. Cultivated meat from a small biopsy causes far less individual animal suffering than slaughter at the end of a lifetime of confinement. Plant proteins require no animal suffering in production. If these technologies reach cost parity and consumer acceptance, they have the potential to reduce animal suffering by orders of magnitude. The welfare case for supporting alternative protein development is therefore extremely strong, even under uncertainty about consumer adoption rates.
