Poor water quality causes silent, chronic suffering in farmed fish. Hypoxia (low dissolved oxygen) forces fish to breathe rapidly and move to the surface, a visible sign of distress. Sublethal ammonia concentrations damage gill tissue, impairing oxygen uptake over time. Temperature outside the species' optimum range impairs immune function and disease resistance. High stocking densities accelerate water quality deterioration. Automatic monitoring with fail-safe aeration provides welfare protection but requires investment. Manual systems relying on periodic checks create welfare risks between checks.
