Positive Animal Welfare - The Science of Good Lives

Modern animal welfare science has moved beyond preventing suffering to understanding and promoting positive experiences. The Five Domains model explicitly includes positive states as welfare goals.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The shift from Five Freedoms to Five Domains represents a fundamental advance in welfare thinking. Freedoms defined welfare as absence of negatives - freedom from pain, hunger, fear. The Five Domains model adds a fifth domain of positive mental states, asking not just whether animals are free from suffering but whether they are able to experience pleasure, engagement, and positive social bonds. This is a richer and more demanding standard. It requires that farms, zoos, and veterinary practices actively provide opportunities for positive experience, not merely prevent the worst outcomes.
