Welfare Considerations

Gorilla welfare in captivity requires complex social group management. Silverback males need appropriate social hierarchies. Females need safe spaces away from male aggression. Young gorillas need mother-rearing not hand-rearing where possible. Stereotypic behaviours including coprophagy and pacing indicate poor welfare. High-quality gorilla facilities provide large, complex environments with multiple indoor and outdoor spaces. Wild gorilla welfare is threatened by snaring (for bushmeat or incidental), habitat destruction, and disease transmission from humans including COVID-19.
