Welfare Considerations

Farmed deer retain wild prey animal responses that make routine procedures highly stressful. Handling for health checks, velvet removal, and transport causes acute fear responses that can cause myopathy (capture myopathy) - a muscle breakdown disorder from intense stress that can be fatal. Velvet antler removal without analgesia causes pain and distress. Well-managed deer farms with habituated animals, low-stress handling facilities, and experienced stockpeople achieve much better welfare than poorly designed systems.
