Welfare Considerations

Goldfish welfare is widely misunderstood. The belief that goldfish are simple, unfeeling animals justifies keeping them in inadequate conditions. Small, unfiltered bowls rapidly accumulate toxic ammonia, causing chronic physiological stress and early death. Goldfish kept in appropriate tanks with filtration, space, and conspecifics can live healthy, long lives and show individual personalities. Carnival prize goldfish face almost certain early death from poor handling, inadequate containers, and uneducated recipients. Evidence from animal cognition research shows goldfish have learning and memory capabilities inconsistent with being treated as disposable.

What You Can Do

Never win or accept goldfish as prizes - they almost certainly will not survive
If keeping goldfish, provide a filtered tank of at least 100 litres for a single fish
Cycle the tank before adding fish to establish beneficial bacteria
Feed appropriately sized portions rather than excess food that adds to ammonia load
Advocate for bans on live animal prizes at fairs and festivals
